In works such as Circular Swirl Spikes, Gyros, Bump, Vortex, Orbit, Match, Ellipse 2 and Perspective, repeated elements respond to imagined force fields. Circular, spherical, helical and orbital systems generate movements that seem to pass through the material.
Bump, for example, is conceived around the perceptual effect of an attractive spherical force that deforms a regular geometric surface. The work changes according to the viewer’s position and to the iridescent behaviour of the material. Vortex investigates concentric movement through Voronoi geometries, while Perspective creates an anamorphic effect connected to observation and spatial displacement.
These works invite the viewer to experience form as an event rather than as a fixed object.
Paper as an advanced material
Paper is not treated by De Florio as a preliminary or fragile medium. It is the structural foundation of the work.
The artist selects papers according to their physical, tactile and optical qualities: cotton-based surfaces, pearlescent finishes, silk fibres, metallic reflections and innovative materials containing residues recovered from leather production.
This attention to materials gives the works a strong sensory dimension. Some surfaces resemble fabric, metal, skin or architectural cladding. The folds create density and resistance, transforming a flat sheet into a complex spatial organism.
The use of paper also introduces an important tension. A material traditionally associated with delicacy becomes capable of producing strength, depth and monumental visual impact.
Between algorithm and craftsmanship
Although De Florio’s work is rooted in technological design, the finished pieces retain the evidence of a slow manual process.
Each structure must be cut, folded, positioned and assembled. Repetition requires concentration, control and patience. Small variations can alter the rhythm of the whole composition.

Precision does not eliminate imperfection; it creates the conditions in which material, light and human intervention can interact.
