SAMANTHA PASSANITI Earths, the substance of connection

Curated by Valeria De Siero and Davide Silvioli

Opening: Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 5:00 PM

On Thursday, December 14, the solo exhibition "Earths, the substance of connection" by Samantha Passaniti, curated by Valeria De Siero and Davide Silvioli, will open to the public at the Natural History Museum of the Academy of Fisiocritics in Siena.

The exhibition marks the conclusive act of the interdisciplinary project "Oltreterra," which, since May 2023, has organized a variety of artistic and cultural events, including exhibitions, workshops, excursions, and moments of dialogue, spanning numerous locations in the provinces of Grosseto and Siena.

Displayed in the exhibition are a range of works created in 2023 by Samantha Passaniti, specifically for Oltreterra, incorporating fragments of Siena soil extracted from the former yellow earth quarry in Bagnoli, Arcidosso, now presented in its natural form or treated, leading to the renowned "burnt Sienna" color. The qualitative aspects of the material intertwine with recycled paper handmade by Passaniti, reclaimed fabric, industrial scraps, and prefabricated materials, creating a rhythmic synergy between artifice and nature—a relationship made possible in this particular context by the earth itself.

The Natural History Museum of the Academy of Fisiocritics (MUSNAF), aside from being the physical venue where the exhibition takes shape, has had a fundamental impact on the project's development, thanks to its extensive collection of "bolus earth" and scientific consultation provided by academic experts. On December 14, in addition to the exhibition opening, a conference will take place at 5:00 PM in the main hall of the Academy of Fisiocritics. During the conference, artist Samantha Passaniti and the curators of "Oltreterra" will present the project, Passaniti's artistic research, and its implications for the territory, from an interdisciplinary perspective. They will be joined by Andrea Benocci, curator of MUSNAF, Marco Giamello, fisiocritic academic and professor of Geology at the University of Siena, Letizia Marsili, fisiocritic academic and professor of Ecology at the University of Siena, and Gioele Rossi, collaborator of the Academy of Fisiocritics and doctor in Geology.

"Earths, the substance of connection," like the entire "Oltreterra" project, unfolds with and for the territory itself, from a physical and material standpoint, as well as a theoretical and relational one, thanks to the scientific consultancy of the Academy of Fisiocritics and the support of the "Storie d’Amiata" Association, the Municipality and Pro Loco of Arcidosso, the Don Pietro Fanciulli Study Center in Porto S.Stefano (GR), the Le Clarisse Cultural Center in Grosseto, and the publisher "Effigi," along with environmental guides Maria Erika Morganti and Marcella Romeri.

Samantha Passaniti (Grosseto, 1981) lives and works between Monte Argentario and Rome, where she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts. In 2015, she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In her work, the act of recovery becomes a performative gesture in which the natural materials and scraps she collects become both the object and subject of her works, bearing new symbols and meanings. She has exhibited at the Perrando Museum, at the MC Gallery in New York, and at the Arteventura Contemporary Art Center in Andalusia.
