Biography
Yemming Charles Hugues (born in Dschang, Cameroon, in 1992) is a Cameroonian painter and sculptor whose practice explores the emotional and social dimensions of contemporary life.
Entirely self-taught during his early years, he developed his artistic language through observation, drawing and painting long before completing formal studies in geography and art education. His commitment to artistic research led him to participate in the Kante Workshops, receive recognition at the YELWATA Art Festival, and later complete professional training in sculpture at the Institute of Artistic Training (IFA) in Mbalmayo. Today he combines his artistic practice with teaching visual arts, contributing to the education of a new generation of young artists in Cameroon.
His work has been presented in exhibitions in Cameroon and Nigeria, while his artistic research continues to evolve through painting, sculpture and mixed-media experimentation.

Yemming Charles Hugues belongs to a generation that has never experienced a world separated from technological acceleration. His paintings do not reject this reality; instead, they investigate it from within.
The recurring presence of social media icons is never decorative. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and LinkedIn become contemporary symbols, replacing the mythological or religious iconography that populated paintings of previous centuries. They function as the new visual language through which identity is constructed, relationships are negotiated and communities are formed.
Yet technology is never presented as the true protagonist. The human face always remains at the centre.
His portraits confront the viewer with calm, direct gazes that resist becoming absorbed by the surrounding digital noise. These figures appear suspended between physical existence and virtual representation, between intimacy and public exposure.
Equally significant is the recurring dialogue between nature and technology. Flowers, trees and vibrant organic colours interrupt the geometry of digital symbols, suggesting that human beings continue to belong to biological systems despite inhabiting increasingly virtual environments.
Rather than expressing nostalgia for a pre-digital past, Yemming proposes a more nuanced reflection: contemporary humanity exists simultaneously within natural, social and technological ecosystems.
