Ernest Compta Llinàs is a Catalan contemporary artist and architect, born in Barcelona in 1973, where he lives and works.
Throughout his artistic career, Compta Llinàs has experimented with different styles, techniques and formats while maintaining one persistent subject at the centre of his research: the human face.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas and paper, alongside charcoal, oil, pastel and ink, he combines elements of figurative painting, abstraction and expressionism to investigate emotional and social diversity.
His subjects are generally anonymous.
Rather than creating conventional portraits intended to describe individual identities, Compta Llinàs uses faces, expressions, gestures and gazes to investigate broader psychological states. Milano, the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild International Winter Exhibition, Artexpo New York, the Biennale des Arts Plastiques et Contemporains de Cannes, the Venice International Art Fair, the Cali Biennial of Contemporary Art, Istanbul Art Fair and Artexpo Lisbon.
His work has also appeared in numerous international publications, including Vogue UK, Vanity Fair UK, Monopol Magazin, Artells, Artego Magazine, Artist Talk Magazine, Art Reveal Magazine, as well as several international magazine covers.
Compta Llinàs has received multiple selections and recognitions throughout his career. In 2025 he was a finalist for The Heralbony Prize in Tokyo and the Artavita Contest in the United States and received a Special Mention Award from Bruxelles Art Vue.
His relationship with NNC Gallery has developed over several years through selections, publications and continued curatorial observation.
He was selected as NNCG Artist of the Month in 2022, received NNC selections in February and March 2022, and was ultimately named NNC Gallery Artist of the Year 2024.
Today, NNC Gallery continues to follow and present his work as part of its international selection of artists for collectors and art professionals.
STATEMENT
The Human Face as Emotional Territory
Ernest Compta Llinàs's work begins with the human figure but moves beyond conventional portraiture.
His paintings explore what remains when social masks disappear.
Faces become mirrors rather than identities: visual territories through which the artist investigates vulnerability, silence, emotional tension and the fragile relationship between presence and absence.
Drawing on expressionism, Compta Llinàs distorts, elongates and fragments the human form. These interventions are not intended to destroy the figure but to reveal something beneath its visible appearance.
Distortion becomes a means of disclosure.
Colour has an equally important function.
It is never merely decorative. It carries emotion, memory, tension and resistance.
Strong chromatic fields frequently coexist with pale or partially desaturated figures, creating an emotional separation between body and surrounding space.
His architectural background also influences the construction of his compositions.
Figures occupy spaces that appear simultaneously physical and psychological. They breathe within them, yet often seem isolated by them.

For more than a decade, Ernest Compta Llinàs has returned persistently to one subject: the face.
Yet his paintings are not portraits in the traditional sense.
The identity of the individual depicted is deliberately secondary.
Instead, the face becomes an emotional landscape.
Through facial features, gazes, gestures and distortions, Compta Llinàs explores the complexity and contradictions of human emotional states.
His figures frequently exist between presence and absence.

Bodies fragment.

THE FACE AFTER THE PORTRAIT

There is something unsettling about the faces painted by Ernest Compta Llinàs.
We recognise them.
And yet we do not know them.
They belong to no specific biography available to us. There is no social status to decode, no narrative that explains precisely who stands before us.
What remains is the face itself.
And this is precisely where Compta Llinàs's work begins.
For centuries, portraiture has been associated with identity: the representation of a particular individual and the construction of how that individual wishes to be remembered.
Compta Llinàs reverses this relationship.
He removes biography in order to intensify humanity.
His anonymous figures become containers for emotional states that cannot easily be attributed to a single person.
Vulnerability.
Solitude.
Longing.
Resistance.
Silence.
The expressionist distortion of his figures plays a fundamental role in this process.
A face does not need to be anatomically correct to be emotionally precise.
Indeed, Compta Llinàs frequently appears to understand distortion as a form of revelation.
He elongates, fragments and simplifies because naturalistic representation would sometimes say less.
His architectural background provides another useful key to understanding the work.
Compta Llinàs does not simply paint figures.
He constructs conditions around them.
Backgrounds, chromatic fields and empty spaces become psychological architecture.
The figure is positioned inside this architecture — sometimes contained by it, sometimes isolated within it, sometimes apparently attempting to resist it.
Colour intensifies the relationship.
In several works, pale or desaturated human forms encounter backgrounds of greater chromatic intensity. The contrast creates an unusual reversal: the environment seems more visually alive while the human being becomes exposed, fragile, almost stripped of protection.
An earlier critical text by art historian Pablo Santirso Garcia described Compta Llinàs as “the painter of vulnerability.”
The definition remains remarkably pertinent.
But vulnerability in these paintings should not be confused with weakness.
To expose vulnerability is to remove a defence.
Compta Llinàs's figures frequently seem to have reached precisely this state: the moment after performance, after social presentation, after the carefully constructed version of ourselves has become impossible to maintain.
What remains is not always beautiful.
But it is recognisable.
This may explain why his anonymous figures can produce such immediate emotional proximity.
We do not need to know their names.
Their identity is constructed through what they make us recognise within ourselves.
