Cesar Vianna
Winner Challenge
2023
Cesar Vianna is a Canadian-Brazilian multidisciplinary artist, born in São Paulo, Brazil, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Design and Architecture from the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP). After years teaching drawing and art history in Brazil, he moved to Canada in 2012, completing a second Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts at Laval University, Quebec.
Vianna’s practice spans illustration, painting, photography, printmaking, and mixed media, combining traditional techniques such as watercolor, acrylics, lithography, and Indian ink with unconventional materials. His work ranges from realism to surrealism and abstraction, often exploring the complexity of human forms and identities, with a recurring focus on representing the LGBTQ+ community with elegance and sensitivity.
Since 2014, he has lived and worked in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, exhibiting in Canada, the United States, Europe, and online platforms. His works have been featured in multiple international magazines — including BeefCake Magazine, Artist Close Up Magazine, and NNC VWorld Magazine — and in exhibitions at institutions such as the Rouyn-Noranda Art Museum, Florence Contemporary Gallery, Montreal Pride Festival, Queer Art Summerfest in New York, and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Statement
His research focuses on the forms and complexity of the human body, alternating between luminous, vibrant representations and monochromatic minimalism. In his work, perfection intertwines with imperfection, and figures merge with the background in a dialogue of lines and proportions. After the pandemic, Vianna transformed negative energy into a bridge to the world, portraying ordinary people from all continents — real faces telling stories of authentic life. His art also represents the LGBTQ+ community, always with elegance and sensitivity, restoring dignity and poetry to bodies and identities often overlooked or stereotyped.
Critical note
In an era dominated by artificial intelligence, Cesar Vianna’s work stands as a precious counterpoint: a return to the hand-drawn mark, to the poetic uncertainty of watercolor, to the depth of Indian ink on paper. His works carry a refined naïve spirit, combining technical mastery with the freshness of instinct. The use of fine papers, pigments, and traditional techniques evokes a “living” art that resists digital homogenization, offering collectors the pleasure of a unique, unrepeatable work, made of genuine and imperfect gestures.
