Critical Note – Threaded Realities: Identity, Memory, and the Everyday in Toheeb Ibrahim’s Art

Toheeb Ibrahim

Toheeb Ibrahim is a Nigerian visual artist whose practice expands the possibilities of textile and fiber art through his distinctive threadcollage technique. By painting and embroidering on fabric, he transforms threads, fibers, and textiles into layered portraits and collages that carry both material density and symbolic resonance.

His works navigate themes of identity, memory, and the everyday, often choosing to represent figures without facial features. This strategy opens the image to projection, allowing viewers to enter the work with their own stories while simultaneously acknowledging those that remain untold. The facelessness becomes a metaphor: a collective mirror where the individual blends with shared histories.

In Ibrahim’s practice, fabric is not merely a support but an active medium. Threads become lines and brushstrokes; textures act as volumes and shadows. The tactility of his surfaces conveys intimacy and presence, evoking both the domestic world of textile traditions and the larger narratives of cultural belonging.

The works draw from daily life—family scenes, urban landscapes, and portraits of women whose hairstyles are both aesthetic markers and cultural signifiers. Through this lens, Ibrahim reclaims the materiality of textile as a space where private memory intersects with social history. His art speaks to human resilience and continuity, situating African contemporary identity within a global conversation about art, tradition, and transformation.
